Type: SAVe Energy (E800/E1000).
The product is a lithium-ion battery based energy storage unit (ESU) for use in battery-powered or hybrid vessels and off-shore units.
System consists of battery modules connected in series to form a string. The ESU is stacked together with identical strings in parallel to provide the required energy capacity. Each string has an independent electrical connection to the external common DC-link, which is not a part of the product.
The ESU is a module based cabinet design. Each ESU consists of control module, propagation control module, cooling module and several string modules. The cabinet has an IP 54 enclosure, and does not use air from the room to cool the battery modules. The external cooling interface is fresh-water (18-28°C) or chilled water in the temperature range 6-15?. The cabinet needs an external cooling system which shall be connected to the internal heat exchanger with water-to-air conversion and an internal ducting system. In addition, the cabinet has a propagation control system based on water-mist to prevent explosion, fire and battery module propagation in case of a thermal runaway event in one battery module.
Under certain conditions of abuse, (overheating, overvoltage, over discharge, crush, puncture, etc.) the cell may vent electrolytes and release gases. These vented gases are flammable and toxic. The ESU will prevent gas release into ambient environment. Any significant gas will be coming out of the one-way valve ventilation connection. The integrator is responsible for ventilation system, diluting and extracting the gas to open air or a safe location.
The interfaces required for the cabinet design is external cooling water (6-15?), gas extraction ventilation, electrical DC main power, auxiliary power supply and control interfaces.
The ESU control module is responsible for normal cooling and propagation control system cooling in case of a thermal runaway. The section contains the following equipment: ESU controller (PLC), Bank Battery Management System (BBMS), HMI Panel, auxiliary and status indication equipment.
The cooling module is responsible for the cooling of the ESU cabinet. The section contains the following equipment: water leakage monitoring system, cooling water interface, air temperature and humidity monitoring system, heat exchangers, hydrogen gas detector, ventilation ducting system, interface to external gas extraction system.
String module contains battery modules and rack battery management system (RBMS). In addition water-mist nozzles connected to propagation control system and interfaces to: DC main power, control monitoring, battery modules external temperature sensors, emergency stop system – are also located in this module.
Propagation control system module contains water-mist system, including water tank, chiller unit, pressure pump, refill connection and release valve.
The ESU controller, with HMI, has a bus-communication interface to the bank battery management system (BBMS). The BBMS has a connection to each of the rack battery management systems (RBMS), located in each string. Limitations is communicated from RBMS and BBMS to the ESU controller and forwarded to external charging/discharging and control/alarm systems. If the BBMS or RBMS detects battery system or a string operating outside of its capability, or if alarm is detected within the string the RBMS opens the main contactor isolating the string form common DC-link.
RBMS main responsibility is to prevent UNSAFE usage and ensure SAFE operation of the battery string.
BBMS main responsibility is to prevent UNSAFE usage and ensure SAFE operation of the battery system.
ESU controller main responsibility is to prevent thermal runaway propagation between battery modules and handle the interface to external systems and personnel.
