Product Description

Wrtsil Sweden AB manufactures six basic types of mechanical shaft seals, three forward and three aft types. The forward seal types include MDL-XXX/YYY (non-split design), MDX-XXX/YYY (split design) and MLX-XXX/YYY (semi-split design). The number combination XXX/YYY represents the components that are used in the seal. XXX stands for type of seal ring housing and YYY stands for type of alignment ring. The various combinations do not affect the function of the seals; it is merely a method of determining which component has been installed. The forward seals can be formed by a combination of components from all types of forward seals; however the denomination will always be MDL, MDX or MLX followed by an XXX/YYY combination., , The aft seal types include KL-XXX/YYYZZZ (non-split design), KR-XXX/YYYZZZ (split design) and KLR-XXX/YYYZZZ (semi-split design). The number combination XXX/YYYZZZ represents the components that are used in the seal. XXX stands for type of seal ring housing, YYY stands for type of alignment ring and ZZZ indicates if an inner rope guard is included and represents the fastening configuration of the alignment ring housing. The various combinations do not affect the function of the seals; it is merely a method of determining which component has been installed. The aft seals can be formed by a combination of components from all types of aft seals; however the denomination will always be KL, KR or KLR followed by an XXX/YYYZZZ combination., , The KR and KLR series aft shaft seals can be equipped with a standard wear down gauge for underwater survey in lieu of dry docking (UWILD). Since the KR and KLR seals are of a split design, they can be replaced without shaft withdrawal or removal of the propeller.
